I have been making my own kombucha for years ever since I attended my first kombucha workshop in nutrition school and received my first SCOBE. Today, I am sharing with you my first experience using kombucha in an at-home face mask! Watch the video below!
I wanted to try this for a few reasons. The first is because I am struggling with large pores that I’d really love to see tighten up! Also because I’m a working mama to two kids under two and I can see the effects of sleepless nights creeping up on my face!
I knew I could count on Kombucha for a myriad of different reasons in terms of health benefits. Here are just a FEW tips, but these are just the tip of the iceberg! Let me know if you’re interested in learning more about kombucha!
-Kombucha is great for LARGE PORES, ACNE, & AGING SKIN because it has a ton of organic acids in it such as BENZOIC ACID (used commonly to treat skin conditions) and HYALURONIC ACID (used in anti-aging products or in beauty products as a natural moisturizer).
The acids naturally kill the pore clogging bacteria, pull out toxins from the skin (hence why your face goes SO red, and then tightens the pores!
Besides just applying it topically, Kombucha is great to ingest too because it is filled with probiotics but also it’s a complete protein. Kombucha contains all 9 of the essential amino acids and 18 out of the 20 amino acids that exist.
When I made the recipe, I knew a certain amount of redness would occur because I knew kombucha increases blood circulation and pulls toxins out of the skin but I was NOT prepared for just HOW red I got! I thought for a moment that I burned my skin or that I’d now have a permanent red face mask on for the next few weeks! Haha Luckily it died down within about 30 minutes! It felt tight but clean! And I was eager to make and apply the soothing kombucha moisturizer cream!
TIP* I would lightly melt the coconut oil ahead of time because, being winter, my house isn’t super warm and my coconut oil remained chunky and firm.
After applying the moisturizer I felt like a million bucks! And the batch size will last me months if I apply in every night!
I WILL BE APPLYING THIS FACEMASK MULTIPLE TIMES THROUGHOUT THE NEXT 30 DAYS AS WELL AS APPLYING THE MOISTURIZER EVERYDAY AND I WILL BE POSTING ABOUT THE RESULTS IN JANUARY!
Here is the recipe:
KOMBUCHA FACE MASK:
3 tsp of fermented kombucha (do NOT use store bought or flavoured kombucha). Contact me to learn more or acquire some of your own SCOBY.
2-3 drops of lavender essential oil (doTERRA are the purest and most regulated brand).
Directions: Apply mask and allow to dry. Gently wipe clean with warm water. DO NOT BE ALARMED at the redness. This means it’s working and it’ll subside within the first hour.
SOOTHING SCOBY MOISTURIZER:
4-6 oz of SCOBY
⅛ cup unflavoured fermented kombucha
2-3 drops of essential oils (lavender is soothing for skin)
⅛ + cup of coconut oil (warm it up so it mixes well)
Directions: In a small food processor or small blender, blend all ingredients. The result will look like applesauce. Apply and keep on skin for about ten minutes. Wipe clean.
I hope you enjoyed this blogpost and please go check out the video for more! I will be posting an update next month to show you exactly what happened to my pores and overall skin health!
